Audi’s rich history isn’t without much toil and trouble, but the German automaker has triumphed in the face of adversity to produce cars that are truly remarkable and legendary.

German sport luxury brand Audi has played a strong role in helping to shape consumer tastes and influence the entire European touring market. For nearly 100 years, the Audi brand has been synonymous with producing high quality, reliable, and well engineered vehicles. An odd start almost scuttled the company’s plans, yet today Audi has risen above adversity and is producing cars that are world renowned in quality and engineering.

August Horch founded Horch Automotive in Cologne, Germany in 1899, and began manufacturing cars in 1901 which featured a horizontal engine producing upwards of 5 horsepower. Demand for these models propelled Horch to expand production and move to a larger manufacturing facility where a newer, more powerful model cranking out a then-amazing 10 horsepower was released.

By 1910, Horch himself was booted out of the company that sported his name so he set up shop elsewhere and began to sell cars under the Audi moniker. Originally, Horch tried to use his family name, but German courts ruled against him thus the Audi name was selected instead. In German, Horch means “hark?and the word “audi?is the Latin translation of horch/hark. So, although he could legally no longer use his family name, the Latinized version of the same won out. Guess which name is known today?

In between a pair of devastating world wars, the modern Audi company began to take shape. Indeed, the “four rings?logo of the company represents the union of four distinct German automotive manufacturers under the auspices of Audi. Yes, you guessed it: the Horch company that originally booted Mr. Horch was absorbed by Audi and makes up one of the four rings. August Horch lived to see that big day, but he also witnessed the dismantling of the company following the end of the second world war.

Reparations was the rallying cry when World War II ended, thus the Soviet Union who was occupying the eastern portion of Germany during the postwar era, appropriated the company, took all of its assets, and by August 1948 the company no longer existed. One year later thanks to state loans and Marshall plan assistance, a resurrected Audi was back on the scene producing a delivery van and a motorcycle. Continuous growth throughout the 1950s highlighted by Daimler’s acquisition of the company in 1958 fueled further expansion. In 1964, the Volkswagen group purchased Audi from Daimler and to this day Audi remains a significant part of the Volkswagen establishment.

By the late 1960s, Audi began what many consider to be its historic run to the top of automotive excellence. New models were developed several of which were also marketed as Volkswagen models for that era. In 1980, Audi shook the automotive world to its foundation when it released its Quattro sports car, a vehicle with full time all wheel drive and a turbocharged engine. Instantly, the Quattro propelled the Audi name to the top of the race car world when the vehicle began to win race upon race. Undeniably, the Quattro was such a runaway hit that the model was banned from some races for having an “unfair?technological advantage.

Throughout the 1980s and the 1990s, Audi began to produce additional models including its first premium model, the Audi V8 in 1988. Sporting a 3.6L 32-valve V8 engine, the Audi V8 featured full time all wheel drive and a four speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. This particular model was a huge departure from earlier Audis and set the brand on a collision course with Mercedes and BMW, Germany’s two other luxury brands in a bid for automotive supremacy.

Today, Audi continues to expand and compete against all of the top luxury brands in the world. New technology including its Audi Space Frame all-aluminum body ?known for its rigidity and improved crashworthiness ?are among the highlights of a brand that doesn’t settle for second best. From sedans to sport coupes to an all new SUV, Audi has a model that competes against the likes of Lexus, Mercedes, Cadillac, Infiniti, and BMW its chief competitors.

That “hark?sound you hear is both the name of a company and the attention the brand deserves in a sea of capable premium models produced by Germany’s esteemed Volkswagen Group. Yes, Audi has weathered several storms and the company appears poised to continue its thrust forward thanks to its many innovations and continued high quality.

First Automobile – Remember When?

You took it home and washed it, polished it and took the vacuum cleaner outside to make sure it was totally spotless, every week!

As a teenager, living at home, with brothers and sisters, the car is your space. Your friends judge you by your car and how smart it looks. Your car gives you the chance of privacy that you never get at home. The opportunity to take your girlfriend somewhere quiet, maybe, or just the chance to go off on your own and enjoy the sea view, maybe do a bit of fishing.

That was just the outside. Remember tweaking the engine, changing the brake fluid, and fitting a spoiler? Did you fit a nitrous oxide nitro kit to improve the performance of your automobile? Did you tell the insurance company that you had modified the engine? Of course you did.

Was your first car in the days before catalysts? When you could smell the nitric oxide emissions coming out of the exhaust when the engine was hot? Do you remember the chlorine like smell as you backed your car into the garage? That was nitric oxide.

Remember when gasoline smelled different. Nowadays, with all the benzene compounds added to it, gas smells totally different. Some peole say that modern, benzene rich, gas in a car with no exhaust catalyst gives out more harmful emissions than the good old type, complete with nitric oxide and hyrdrocarbons.

Remember the leaks in the trunk? Oh, you had forgotten that. Remember how the heater leaked coolant all over the carpet? No? Did you forget that, too? Remember the strange noise that came from the front wheels at 75mph, but that went away once you were up to 85mph?

Strange isn’t it, how memory works? Reminiscing is one thing, but would you really ever go back?

What defines the term sports car and why are we so fascinated with them. Is it simply the flowing curves of the body design, the massive power output of the high revving engines or could it even be the distinctive throaty musical note of the exhaust pipes. Everyone will have a different opinion on what they think makes sports cars special and for the reasons why we love them so much. Even people who say they are impractical or unnecessary cannot help but to turn and look when one drives past displaying its beautiful contours hinting at the power hidden under the perfectly painted panels.

Since the development of motorised vehicles a small select group of individuals have always had the undying fascination of designing and building them bigger, more powerful and faster than they either needed to be or really should be with any regard to safety. This was no different with the motor car industry, from its relative simple and sluggish beginnings the car quickly developed into a very useful mode of transport and working tool. For some this new way to transport us around turned into an obsession of power and speed and welcomed the age of the racing cars and sports cars.

To begin with motor vehicles were built for more functional than aesthetically pleasing reasons and their ability to carry both people and heavy loads is what drove the designers and manufacturers forward. Humans though have an eye for beauty and a thirst for power and speed, combining these attributes the birth of the sports cars was inevitable.

As new developments occurred in the early motor industry a small number of designers, builders and drivers pushed the motor car to its limits on race tracks to test its abilities against other manufacturers vehicles. These races fuelled the next generation of cars and drivers. As engines became more powerful the ability to race these machines began to push the designs and needs to new levels this quite often was at the expense of someone’s life. Big powerful engines were placed into fragile frames and pushed to the limit often with dire consequences to drivers and spectators. But humans have a need to go faster and faster and this drove these brave and quite often reckless early pioneers to design better and more powerful machines and this began the start of the new age of the modern motor car. Safety was usually an after thought if it came up at all, the main focus was pushing the machines and drivers to their limits and beyond if possible. The engines power output quickly out grew the motor cars ability to handle these increases and the designers had to rethink the chassis and suspensions limitations. As with in the aircraft industry the designs of planes and engines regularly changed along with the abilities and reliability of the aircraft, the motor cars began to evolve along the same lines with new ideas and breakthroughs in technologies incorporating aerodynamics to help reduce drag and stronger building materials for chassis and bodywork.

Developing test vehicles purely for racing was the beginning of what we now class as the sports car. After the Second World War a new breed of sports car began to emerge. The once very high-priced and hard to obtain race bred cars that only the most wealthy and enthusiastic owners could secure began to evolve into a more accessible vehicle with the additional comforts and road functionalities, and what was even more important, a more affordable price tag making them more accessible to the average owner and driver. The sports cars had taken their first steps from the exclusive domain to main stream availability. Over the next few years as advancements were made on and off the racing circuit designs began their slow transformation into the popular modern shapes of today’s models. Many famous names have added their own distinctions to the sports car moulds and most can be easily identified by pure shape alone even today.

Engine Overheat: No Need To Panic

When a car’s engine overheats, most new drivers who have yet to experience their own share of overheating engines would be on the tip of their toes with their hearts pumping faster than usual. When you do experience such, the first thing you should do is turn off your car’s engine.

When a car’s engine overheats, most new drivers who have yet to experience their own share of overheating engines would be on the tip of their toes with their hearts pumping faster than usual. Panic is one thing that they do which is not the recommended reaction when encountering such a situation with your vehicle.

Your car’s engine usually overheats when there is a low coolant level in the coolant reservoir. If you do remember your basics, the coolant absorbs the heat from your engine so that it does not accumulate heat. So if there is no coolant or there is a low level of coolant, do expect such a situation to arise. Your coolant does not get used up so if there is a low coolant level, then there may be a leak somewhere.

When you do experience an overheating engine, the first thing you should do is turn off your car’s engine. This would facilitate in lessening any damages that could have been brought about by the situation. Also, make sure that you turn on your signal lights and flashers so that people and other motorists would know that you are experiencing a vehicle problem.

Then, you should turn the heater and the heater blow to high. This would make sure that heat is turned away from your engine. You should also open the hood of your vehicle and start checking the coolant level. Remember that you should not open the radiator cap if the engine is still hot. You can wait until it cools down.

Start adding coolant to the coolant reservoir. You can use a funnel for this task. Make sure that you add coolant up until the line which states that it is the right amount for your car. You can run to your trusted mechanic for repairs of your coolant reservoir once you are back on the road.

The number of vehicles sold for under $15,000 is still strong and soon to expand greatly in the face of cheap Chinese imports set to flood the North American market within one year’s time.

performance parts market, Saturn, Ford, Dodge, GM, Toyota, Scion, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Chevrolet

Are you looking for a new car? If you are, there are several models available to you for under $15,000. Twelve are mentioned here; thirteen if you include the Nissan Versa to be released later this summer. Increased competition has made this a great time to buy a new car so compare, shop, and save!

Chevrolet Cobalt ?With an MSRP of under $13,000, this Chevrolet model is one of the lowest priced cars manufactured in the U.S. A competitive price when you realize that few new car models are priced so low. If the Cobalt price still isn’t low enough for you, then Chevrolet also markets the Aveo, a vehicle GM imports from its South Korean subsidiary Daewoo. The Aveo retails for just $9890!

Ford Focus ?Retailing at $13,990 the Focus is the lowest priced vehicle sold by “blue oval?in the U.S. Not cheap enough for you? Special incentives on the ZX3 version of the Focus can lower the price by as much as $3000!

Honda Civic Coupe ?It is getting increasingly difficult to find a Civic under $15,000. Why is that? Well, Honda has been gradually pushing the Civic up market in a bid to compete against the Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla. Don’t worry, Honda is about to release a car even smaller [and cheaper] than the Civic: the $12,000 Fit will be in Honda showrooms later this year!

Hyundai Accent and the Hyundai Elantra ?Leave it to Hyundai to have two vehicles in its line up that sell for under $15,000. Starting at just $12,455 the Accent GLS is bargain basement, but not stripped. The car comes with four wheel disc brakes, 8 way adjustable driver’s seat, and ABS. The Elantra is slightly up market and retails for about $1300 more than the Accent.

Kia Rio and Kia Spectra ?With an MSRP listed at $11, 110 the Kia Rio is the lowest priced four door car sold in the U.S. Recent upgrades for the model include several safety features: six airbags, impact-absorbing steering column, front and rear crumple zones and side-impact door beams. Select the Spectra for a car that is better appointed and larger than the Rio.

Saturn ION ?Base models of the little car from Tennessee currently are retailing around $13,500, but that price may drop later in the year as GM seeks to move several slow selling cars including the ION

Toyota Corolla ?Always competitive, the Corolla is priced at $14,105 and is considered by industry leaders to have the highest quality amongst all small cars on the market. A lower cost model, the Echo, has been discontinued but a new model, the Yaris, will appear later this year and retail for about $12,000.

Scion xA and Scion xB ?Two of the three models sold by Toyota’s Generation “Y?division, Scion, are priced under $15,000. The xA starts around $13,500 and the xB sells for about $1000 more than that.

So, are the days of finding transportation under $15,000 soon to be behind us? On the contrary, with the 2007 importation of cars from China the under $10,000 category will soon have new life as cars from Chery and Geely hit U.S. showrooms pushing new prices down to as low as $6600! As a result, Ford, Dodge, and others are looking at ways to build and import cars overseas or in Mexico that will sell for much than current base models.

Expert Tips On Buying Certified Used Cars

Used cars are not as risky a purchase as they used to be. Thanks to certification programs, the industry is changing for the better, and more Americans are turning to used cars for better value.

Expert Tips On Buying Certified Used Cars

Used cars are not as risky a purchase as they used to be. Thanks to certification programs, the industry is changing for the better, and more Americans are turning to used cars for better value.

Certification offers a way to weed out unscrupulous used car dealers who might sell damaged cars. The nearly 600,000 vehicles damaged by floodwaters from last year’s storms are prime candidates to end up as part of such scams.

As more car buyers turn to certified vehicles, the number sold this year is expected to increase significantly from the 1.6 million purchased in 2005. Besides costing less than their new-car counterparts, certified vehicles also come with many of the same benefits, eliminating much of the guesswork associated with buying used.

Be wary, however, because not all certification programs are created equal. To help sort out the best from the worthless, used-car experts offer the following tips:

Certified by whom? Make sure you know who sets the standards for the certification program and who makes certain they’re being enforced. Look for a manufacturer-backed program-the best people to certify a car are the ones who built it and specialize in that make. Most manufacturers will offer a limited warranty in addition to honoring the car’s original warranty.

Do your homework. Research the makes and models that make sense for your driving needs. Check safety and reliability reports published online and prices from your whole area.

How was the car certified? At a minimum, a car should have a detailed mechanical inspection and a vehicle history report. Carfax Vehicle History Reports are a mandatory part of the certification process for 80 percent of today’s manufacturer-certified programs.

What does it get you? The certified used car you’re buying probably comes with an extended warranty. Make sure you know exactly what this covers and for how long. You can always add additional coverage.

Ask for more. If you want roadside assistance, options added to the car, free oil changes or anything else, don’t be afraid to ask.

Finally, Alternative Fuel Engines Are Gaining Respect

In order for all of us to understand what is going on in the world about the high price of gasoline. Let us look at one man’s quest to make the engine a better and cheaper running machine, a quick history lesson if you will.

alternative fuel, diesel, oils, engine

In order for all of us to understand what is going on in the world about the high price of gasoline. Let us look at one mans quest to make the engine a better and cheaper running machine, a quick history lesson if you will.

A lot of people think of the diesel engine with the black soot soaring upwards from large semi-trucks on the highways and byways of America. We have all smelled the odor when they idle in a parking lot. If you have ever been in the Army you can remember the deuce and half trucks and their smell.

This is how the diesel engine has developed but was this the way its inventor imaged it, as an engine running on petroleum? The diesel engine was invented by Rudolf Diesel and ran with success on its fuel of choice – PEANUT OIL !

Diesel also tried out successfully with using whale oil but neither fuel was as prevailing or as easily available as petroleum. At this time petroleum based oils were the most economically obtainable.
So the engine took the route of easy oil and you now know the rest of the story.

Rudolf Diesel had stated “The diesel engine can be fed with vegetable oils and would help considerably in the development of agriculture of the countries which use it”

And later predicted that “The use of vegetable oils for engine fuels may seem insignificant today. But such oils may become in course of time as important as petroleum and the coal tar products of the present time.”

You might be asking why hasn’t someone done something about this in the past 100 years? Well, it has come full circle and we are now doing something.

Keeping the above mentioned history in mind and looking to our future, our affiliation with the oil industries and our addiction on foreign oil, hopefully, will motivate us to explore options with a more open mind. The many experiments that have lately come alive attest to what is possible if we are willing to change in a positive direction or maybe to go back to the primary vision of Rudolph Diesel and his engine.

Here a several of new advances moving full steam ahead:

1. From fat or vegetable oil through a chemical process called transesterification comes biodiesel an alternative fuel. This process breaks apart the glycerin from the fat or vegetable oil, creating two new products, glycerin and biodiesel. The most popular source for biodiesel is soybean oil, but poultry fats can also be used.

2. Ethanol, another clean-burning fuel has sparked interest in biodiesel which is being helped by new government standards and rising gas prices. A number of ethanol projects developing from corn, soft wood and other sources also are under way.

3. Also, today May 20, 2006 in the news, there is research being done in an early 1900s red brick armory at the Kossuth County fairgrounds in Iowa. The engine can run on a number of fuels including hydrogen, ethanol, natural gas, propane or digester gas from landfills. The company is initially focusing on making more efficient, environmentally friendlier engines to replace those used in generators and in forklift trucks, airline ground equipment, irrigation pumps, tractors and buses.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 commands an increase in renewable fuel usage to 7.5 billion gallons in 2012 from 4 billion gallons in 2006. The bill also supports the alternative fuel industry with production incentives such as tax credits.

Early this year, the building and production of another new vehicle from the Mazda Motor Corporation has already begun. And the stage has been set in Hiroshima, Japan, which is also where the headquarters of this giant automobile company is based. And this new vehicle that would soon be on sale this year is the Mazda CX 7.

The Mazda CX 7 is a crossover sport utility vehicle that is midsize. And this vehicle is actually the production version of the Mazda MX Crossport that was a concept car. When this vehicle starts to strut its stuff on the market, it would actually be marketed as a 2007 model. This vehicle will fill the niche that the Mazda Tribute has left behind. However, it has been said that this vehicle would only stay for a short time which would only be up until the company is able to take off two more new sport utility vehicles come the year 2008. The Mazda CX 7 is considered to be quite similar to the Honda Pilot, the Nissan Murano, Subaru B9 Tribeca, and the Toyota Highlander.

Beneath the glamour and the beauty of the Mazda CX 7, one’s interest would also be held by the machine that keeps this vehicle running. The source of power of this vehicle is a 2.3 liter straight four MZR engine. This very same engine is also used in the Mazda Mazdaspeed 6. This power source could actually produce some 244 hp at 5000 rpm and also 258 pound feet of torque at a low 2500 rpm. Aside from that, this vehicle also boasts of additional features to make the driving and riding the Mazda CX 7 more pleasant and very enjoyable. The list of features include fully independent suspension systems, four wheel ventilated disc brakes with anti lock brakes made standard, and a stability control and traction control system. Interested parties may also have a choice between a front wheel drive and the Mazda Active Torque Split all wheel drive system. The latter actually has a computer controlled coupling that is able to provide up to a maximum of fifty percent of the whole of the engine’s torque to its rear wheels.

The Mazda CX 7 has been built on a new platform which has shown that the rumors were untrue about this sport utility vehicle using the same Ford/Mazda CD3 platform that is also used by the Ford Edge crossover, the Mazda6, and the Lincoln MKX crossover.

To know more about the Mazda CX 7 and also to purchase parts of this vehicle and other Mazda parts, you can actually visit Auto Parts Discount. Ariel Atom Makes You Want To Say Oh My Gawd!

This article tells the reader about the Ariel Atom, a new consumer friendly F1 style race car for the average person.

luxury, luxury cars, exotic cars, luxury car rental, exotic car rental

Jay Leno, America’s most popular car collector and host of the Tonight Show, received the very first Ariel Atom 2 produced in the U.S. This little demon is an F1-inspired racecar that anyone can own. The Ariel Atom, which was first developed in 2000, is for one and only one type of driver – an unadulterated fiend for speed, performance, and fun! An entire page of emboldened exclamation points falls short of describing the giddiness and excitement this two-seat racecar delivers to an adrenaline junkie. The magnitude of the acceleration from driving this car around a track might just pull the skin right off of a face!

Brammo Motorsports is licensed to make the Atom Ariel 2 in the U.S. UK-based Ariel Motor Company produces the Atom abroad. The U.S. version deploys a General Motors’ Ecotec 2.0 L SC engine, while Ariel uses a Honda IVTEC. Both engines produce around 300 horsepower, which does sound somewhat laid back for an asphalt rocket of this nature. However, with the Atom’s weight just a tad over 1,000 pounds, the vehicle’s weight to power ratio, 4.10 to 1, is comparable to the McLaren F1, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, and the Ferrari Enzo. It goes from zero to 60 mph faster than you can say “Porsche Carrera” (2.8 seconds). The Bugatti Veyron 16.4, which costs $1.34 million, does it in 2.5 seconds. The Atom’s price range is $35,000 to $75,000.

The car’s chassis and body are one and the same. It has a tubular steel frame that houses two seats, four tires, two lights, a steering wheel, an engine, and, thankfully, an excellent set of brakes and safety belts. The perfect pitch of the engine is the Atom’s sound system. There is no roof, windshields, and doors. When it accelerates, the aerodynamics from its low, wide shape, nose cone, rear-positioned engine, and front/rear double-wishbone suspension pushes the car down into the road to improve its stability.

Although the Atom is available in six colors, it is hard to call it a luxury toy. But since it is neither a street-legal vehicle nor an item available at Wal-Mart, it fits the bill. However, if purchased as a kit car and assembled correctly with all the extra goodies added on, it may be street legal in some states. But who cares? Driving this badass car on any road with restrictions or impositions would be outright perverse.

Simon Saunders, who has designed both cars and motorcycles for some very prestigious manufacturers, is the designer of the Ariel Atom. He set out to create a vehicle that gave drivers the thrill of a motorcycle with the safety of a car. Check out the videos on the company’s Web site and see for yourself. Mr. Saunders is a bloody genius!

Lustrous and elegant, the new 2007 Jaguar XKR concept also has been finally unveiled. The two-door convertible and four-seater coupe XKR represents the latest technology in lightweight vehicle structure of future Jaguar vehicles. It also shows off fine design and efficient performance. The Jaguar XKR truly offers its occupants nothing but a smooth and sporty driving experience.

Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Director or Design states: “We talk at Jaguar of how our new generation of models are ‘beautiful, fast cars’. It’s a phrase that ideally sums up our brand and can be applied to every car we design. We were extremely proud of the reaction to the new XK when it was unveiled last year – it is as beautiful as you would expect a Jaguar sports car to be. Now, the new XKR has a look that emphasizes the ‘fast’ aspect of our design statement. The ‘powerline’ that runs from the front wheel through the cabin area and into the car’s rear haunches remains, and we have added to that latent feeling of power by adding some strong performance features such as the vents that signify the potent supercharger and the stunning new alloys that fill the wheel arches and give the car real purpose.”

The Jaguar XKR convertible is considered as the most potent model in the Jaguar family. Like other XK Jaguar models, the new XKR also provides modern technology features like the aluminum monocoque body structure. The unique front bumper design showcases the sporty side of Jaguar models. The Jaguar XKR is equipped with the supercharged V-8 4.2-liter engine and the high-class calibration six-speed automatic transmission that helps the driver to have a nice drift on the road. The up-rated 420 HP that produces an amount of 413 pounds of torque shows the improved performance of the new XKR. The improvement in power and torque of the XKR is obtained because of the latest additions on the engine components. For the very first time, Jaguar engineers equipped the new XKR with the Variable Inlet Camshaft Timing System. This added system helps the engine to adjust in various situations depending on the speed and the volume of load.

Interior features of the new Jaguar XKR include the high-class sport-designed seats and a spacious cabin that will surely offer a comfortable ride for its occupants. An easy to use instrument panel and a clear dashboard area also provide efficiency in driving. The new 2007 Jaguar XKR is remarkably a true and elegant sports car.
